Call for Art: X

Seeking artwork submissions for new exhibition in Spring 2024.

Prøve Gallery seeks works of art centered on the visual, linguistic, and cultural currency of the “X” as a potent symbol of intersectionality and social change. In the 21st Century, the “X” as a symbol has become an increasingly-used and often controversial letter, as it has led what writer Jack Qu'emi has called the “Linguistic Revolution.” Transforming signifiers of identity and pronouns—including Latinx, womxn, and Mx.—the use of “X” is a powerful signifier of that can rethink gender beyond the binary, make room for trans, queer, agender, and gender non-conforming or fluid identities, and suggest the many intersecting identifications (gender-based, sexual, racial, ethnic, etc.) that compose human identities. The “X” is also an ancient symbol, cutting across time, cultures, geography, and languages.

This exhibition seeks to create a visual and textual dialogue about the many ways that artists explore and employ the “X” in their creative expressions and/or as a part of their individual identities. Artists are encouraged to interpret the prompt as widely and creatively as possible. Some potential examples may include works that address Latinx culture and language, gender neutrality, X signatures, public figures such as Malcolm X, X as a typographical symbol, etc. Works from any medium will be considered for selection.
