Demons & Angles: Moments of Clarity. New Works by Jay Whitcomb

Born in 1981 in Bristol, Connecticut, Jay Whitcomb was surrounded by art from an early age as his mother studied portraiture, watercolor, and painting. Whitcomb’s own art practice began with illustration and painting with a surreal approach. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he focused on the human figure, drawing, painting, printmaking, and animal rendering. Whitcomb’s artistic style explores the similarities between human and animal movements and behaviors as the blueprint for inspiration. His process includes layering of painting and drawing while combining his past studies and experiences with a subconscious and studious approach.

Demons & Angels is a body of recent work created in response to Whitcomb’s experiences of personal hardship, interior demons, and a journey to rock bottom and back. As the artist states, “There is ugliness found in beauty and a beauty that hides behind ugliness.” The mixed media works in this exhibition, which were “guided by [the artist’s] angels,” speak to the power of art to confront anguish, work towards redemption, and offer opportunities to heal.
